4:3 Bhagavad Gita

sa evaayam mayaa te 'dya yogah proktah puraatanah |
bhakto 'si me sakhaa ceti rahasyam hy etad uttamam ||3||

sa evaayam – certainly that same;
yogah – science of yoga;
mayaa – I (by me);
proktah – shall instruct;
te – to you;
(a)dya – today.

(a)si – you are;
me – my;
bhakta – devotee;
ca – and;
sakhaa – friend;
iti – thus;
hi – certainly;
etad – this;
uttamam – ultimate;
rahasyam – mystery.

That same ancient science of yoga,
the utmost secret,
I shall certainly instruct to you today
because you are my devotee and friend.

Context

This verse solves the problem presented in the previous text, namely, that the disciplic succession for importing pure knowledge into this world becomes scattered over the vastness of time. The solution is: Krishna periodically restarts this succession whenever it is required. In this case, he is first delivering knowledge not to the Sun-god, but to Arjun.

Bhakta & Sakha - Bhakta (devotee) and Sakha (friend).

Naturally, Arjun wonders why Krishna should choose him for such a prestigious post as the original recipient of transcendental knowledge. Krishna mentions his qualifications as being his devotee and friend. One reveals secrets only to those close and trusted. As Arjun is a close and trusted devotee and friend of the lord, he is fit to receive divine knowledge
