On the high bar... There is this instance when you’re on the bar and you make a complete swing, a circle. I did that, but my left hand grip gave way. So I’m flying around and I don’t know what I’m going to do. My left hand is off the bar, and I'm still flying around in circles.

The only thing I could do at this time was a kip. So-called kip dismount.

In the kip dismount your body is sort of in the shape of a D. When you do a kip from the letter D, you can end up in the shape of a letter C, so that when you leap over the bar you perform an arching thing and land on both feet.

I had done that many a time, but not while I was spinning, making a complete circle. ‘Cause that was pretty difficult.

So, when I was turning a circle, it was just before I had to make a decision. I decided a kip dismount. Well, I didn’t kip enough. When I let go of the bar, I just went horizontal. I went horizontal and landed about 10 feet away and my back hit. I landed right on a big rock.

So I got up and looked at the bar.

I jumped up, grabbed it, got into it again. I made a couple swings, then I made a kip dismount and landed very gracefully on the ground.

Now I’m thinking that came in handy, because I was a daredevil. I would get into all kind of problems, but I always seemed to be able to address the physical ones.

We had gone to the store to buy some food, and  were carrying it in a cardboard box. I held it in front of me while I was walking out to the car.

I left the store, and I’m walking out, and I can’t see the ground too far ahead of me. Someone before me had accidentally dropped a bottle of mayonnaise and it was all over the sidewalk. So I figured, "goodness, how am I going to get out of this"

Anyway, you know how it is, you can think awfully faster than you could act. So when I took that first step in the mayonnaise, my legs slipped out from under me. What did I do? Automatically, I threw the box, or more like moved it way in front of me for counterweight. And I did what? You guessed it.

I did a kip dismount.

I landed on my feet. There was a man coming into the store who saw me. "How did you do that."

"Oh, " I says "nothing, no problem for me." So it comes in handy. Of course, you’re going to say, "you mean you actually would do that?" Yeah,  it wasn’t just once that I did; I did it many times. Cause like I say, I always was running the wrong direction, doing everything wrong.

I used to play tennis. I’m coming home and I’m jogging, with a tennis racket in my hand. And we have the elevated subway and I had to go past it. There was no cars moving, they were all deserted, many of them. Now, I couldn’t figure this out. I didn’t know what was going on.

We had had some rain and it puddled near the sidewalk. Then the weather turned warm and the water dried out. And what was left was the equivalent of sand. Well of course I had no knowledge of this, and I usually didn’t come home by that route.

So I was taking giant steps. And I came to this one particular area. There was this water in it, on the street, so I decided to just take a large, very long step over it. Well, to my consternation, when my foot hit the walk, it went out from under me. And believe it or not, I didn’t do a kip, because I wasn’t in the position.

But I turned around in mid-air.

So now I was facing the street. Had the tennis racket and ball in one hand and nothing in the other hand. So, I went on both my hands and my feet. I did a quick pushup, got straightened, and kept running, without missing a beat.
